George Whitefield was probably the most famous religious figure of the eighteenth century.
HE ignited the Great Awakening which became one of the most formative events in American history.
Because of his shouting pulpits closed to Whitefield in many “respectable” English churches. When this happened, he took his messages outside, often preaching at the edges of cities. This was considered nothing less than sacrilege to the “proper” church folks of his day.
When he came to America in the late 1730s, the colonies welcomed him, Many believe that God used the Great Awakening to draw the American colonies into closer union, preparing them for independence from Britain.
At a time when there were no microphones, this powerful preacher projected his voice so loud that he could be heard up to a mile away. Some people even fell to the floor as though dead, so strong were their feelings of conviction when they heard Whitefield’s messages.
He once said about his fellow preachers.
“I love those that thunder out the Word, The Christian World is in a dead sleep. Nothing but a loud voice can awaken them out of it.”
